PIERCE CITY, Mo. -

Both Eagles and Lady Eagles crowned champions

A team without a track turned out to be the best track team in the Spring River Valley Conference this year.

The Jasper boys and girls each ran away with the team championships at the meet held Monday at Pierce City’s Don Keebaugh Stadium.

The Jasper High School football field doesn’t have a track, which means the team have to run on the grass football field or the town’s streets.

The Jasper boys had 152 points, outdistancing second-place Pierce City, who had 96 points. The Diamond boys’ team finished in sixth place with 32 points.

On the girls’ side, Jasper had 139 points and took the title over Pierce City, which had 106 points. The Diamond girls had 43 points to place fifth.

The highlight of the day for the Lady Wildcats in the meet was the performance of senior Lacey Carneal.

Carneal took second place in both the pole vault (she jumped 9 feet) and second in the long jump (14 feet, 5 inches). She added a fourth place finish in the triple jump.

Senior Kim Spencer had the lone third-place finish for Diamond, doing so in the 3,200-meter run, finishing with a time of 13:13.91.

The Diamond 3,200-meter team and 400-meter relay team each placed fourth. The 3,200-meter team was made up of Taryn Stevens, Spencer, Breanna Carneal and Sarah Bentz. The 400-meter team was Stevens, Emily Gilbert, Lacey Carneal and Breanna Carneal.

Fifth place finishes went to Megan Dean in the discus, Spencer in the 1,600-meter run and Gilbert in the triple jump.

Dean added a sixth place finish in the shot put, while two relay teams placed sixth.
The 800-meter relay team of Kim Elder, Jordan Welch, Gilbert and Bentz placed sixth, as did the 1,600-meter relay team of Stevens, Bentz, Welch and Gilbert.

On the boys’ side, Diamond had one conference champion in Kenny Newman. Newman won the championship in the discus event with a toss of 134-3. He took fourth place in the shot put.

Tim Enayati placed third in the triple jump and fourth in the high jump.
All four of the Diamond relay teams also placed. In the 3,200-meter run, the Diamond team of James Pace, David Bird, Michael Testerman and Tim Carver took fourth.

The 1,600-meter team Bird, Pace, Nathan Cantu and Testerman placed fifth.
Bird, Pace, Cantu and Carver ran in the 400-meter and 800-meter teams that both placed sixth.
