Local youth fastpitch softball team competes at AFA national tournament

The FireBirds, a local 12-and-under fastpitch softball team with players from Carthage and Webb City, took third place at the American Fastpitch Association (AFA) National Tournament held July 22-27, 2008.

There were 19 teams from across the United States competing in their respective age divisions.

Kaitlin Beason received the honor of throwing out the first pitch of the 2008 National Tournament at the opening ceremony after winning the “Velocity Champion” title for throwing 59 mph in the pitching skills competition.

Courtney Jones secured third place in the home run skills competition after hitting six-of-10 balls pitched for home runs.
