On the road for the second time this season, CatTracks continued its season Saturday, March 19, at the Lebanon Family YMCA Invitational.

Although thunderstorms moving through the area cut the meet short, CatTracks, a Carthage Fair Acres Family Y youth swim team, took second in the team standings behind Seymour.

“Safety regulations require that the pool be closed for at least 30 minutes when lightning is sighted,” CatTracks swim coach Lyman Burr said. “We finished 64 of the 84 events. Everyone on the team contributed and swam several individual and relay events.”

Carthage, which traveled to Seymour on Jan. 22, had 28 swimmers compete — the largest group to travel this season —despite many previous high-point winners absent because of spring break.

“CatTracks enjoys traveling to Lebanon at the fairly new indoor pool as it has a good amount of deck space with three walls of windows surrounding the pool,” Burr said. “Our local (Fair Acres Family Y) swim families are truly wonderful in supporting their swimmers, dedicating their Saturday to this commitment and driving nearly two hours to Lebanon. Our team is successful because of our parent involvement and each swimmer’s enthusiasm.”

Even though the meet was manually scored and did not track individual high points, Burr said Payton Williams, Lauren Dawald, Katie Watson, Carrie Wallace, Cerenity Hawkins and Grace Jennings all had outstanding days.

Burr said newcomers Mathias Metcalfe, 13, and Sonora Stearns, 9, demonstrated “strong improvements” and medaled.  Jeff Dawald, swimming in his first meet as a 15-year-old, took third while competing against 17-year-old competition in the individual medley.

“Each swimmer made an exceptional effort, especially considering it was a 25-meter pool rather than a 25-yard pool, which makes each trip down the pool about 7 feet longer,” Burr said. “Of special note, Ethan Phillipi, 8, Kate Potter, 7, and Brianna Royer, 10, participated in their very first CatTracks swim meet and each placed in one or more events.”

Earlier this season, at the Seymour YMCA Winter Invitational, CatTracks took 26 swimmers and competed against teams from Seymour, Lebanon, Houston and Springfield. CatTracks captured second place in the team standings and brought home seven of 10 individual high-point awards: Addison Hobson (girls 7-8), Carrie Wallace (girls 9-10), Hannah Baker (girls 11-12), Shelby Hatcher (girls 13-14), Payton Williams (boys 9-10), Trystan Castillo (boys 11-12) and Addison Burr (boys 13-14).

Next up, CatTracks continues its season at home at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30. Carthage’s home meet is open to all area youth (18-and-under) swimmers. Interested participants should call coach Burr at 417-359-9384 or stop by the Fair Acres Family Y for registration details.
