For the first time since 1993, Jasper High School is 3-0 to begin the season after the Eagles came away with an impressive 32-0 shutout victory over long-time nemesis Appleton City Friday at Jasper High School.
It was Jasper’s 2009 home opener, and first-year head coach Josh Dirks made sure the Eagles wouldn’t disappoint. Jasper, by the way, had not beaten Appleton City since 2002.
The Eagles head to Miller next week for a conference showdown against the undefeated and state-ranked Cardinals at 7 p.m. Friday.
At Pleasant Hope, the Sarcoxie Bears rebounded from last week’s Spring River Valley Conference loss to Miller with a thrilling 21-14 win against Pleasant Hope at Pleasant Hope High School.
The Bears, who led 14-7 at the half, scored the go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth quarter before making a quality defensive stand late in regulation. Sarcoxie, now 2-1 this season, faces SRVC rival Diamond next week for its 2009 home opener at 7 p.m. Friday at Sarcoxie High School.
Webb City, which entered Friday’s play with a 17-game winning streak, opened Central Ozark Conference play with a 56-7 win over the Willard Tigers at Willard High School.
The Cardinals, now 3-0 overall this season and 1-0 in the conference, wrap up a three-game road trip against Ozark next week at 7 p.m. Friday at Ozark High School.
