CHS places 3rd overall; Freeman, Bridges qualify for state

A stiff wind once again hampered Carthage’s golfers on Thursday during the Class 3 District 6 golf tournament at Briarbrook Golf and Country Club.

It didn’t seem to bother Erin Campbell.

Campbell, one of four senior strikers competing for a spot at state, shot a 3-over par 75 to take medalist honors. Campbell had the same score two days prior during the Southwest Conference tournament. The weather, though, was much more favorable on Tuesday.

Campbell joined teammate Trevor Freeman, who shot 1-under 71 to win the SWC tournament, as Carthage’s second medalist winner is as many tournaments.

The Tigers completed 54 holes in less than a week at Briarbrook.

Campbell used a par approach, while taking each hole and each shot one at a time to counter the extreme conditions facing the golfers.

“I had set a game plan for each hole,” explained Campbell. “I wanted to make sure not to bogey.”

It worked.

Players had to prepare for the strong winds from the onset. Coaches preached a slow approach to the day.

“The way conditions were, Erin shot a great round,” said coach Lowell Catron.

Fellow seniors Brady Bridges and Trevor Freeman made the cut, qualifying for the state tournament.

Bridges fired a 10-over 82 and Freeman an 85 to secure a spot in the top 15.

“Brady had a good round,” Catron said. “I know Trevor was a little disappointed with his round, but the name of the game today was to get through no matter what.”

All three were named to the Class 3 District 6 All-District team for their effort.

The state tournament is set for May 12-13 at Rivercut in Springfield.
