For the record, the Lady Tigers know how to make things interesting.
“I guess that’s a good thing,” said Chris Rogers, Carthage High School head coach.
Case in point: the Lady Tigers — for the third time this season — went into overtime against Willard Tuesday afternoon, only to fall in a penalty kick shootout at Fair Acres Sports Complex.
Penalty kicks, according to Rogers, are still a work in progress.
“We didn’t do a very good job of shooting,” said Rogers. “We haven’t practiced penalty kicks, but I think we did pretty well overall.”
Rain fell consistently throughout the Central Ozark Conference match, but that didn’t squelch the fire from either Carthage or Willard, as the league and district rivals battled to a 1-1 draw on senior night before Willard held off the Lady Tigers in two overtimes.
Willard jumped out to a 1-0 lead minutes before the end of the first half, but the Lady Tigers were able to tie it up with less than 10 minutes left in regulation when Patricia Marin, off an assist from Jessica Diaz, found the back of the net.
Carthage, backed by stellar offensive play in the first half, outshot Willard throughout, but the Lady Tigers, now 1-2 this season in overtime, came unglued offensively late in the second half. Even so, keeper Ashley Shannon, making her varsity debut at the net, kept Willard in check for the entire second half.
“In the first half we did a lot of things right,” said Rogers. “We made one error and they scored. We fell apart for all of five minutes in the second half, but found a way to score.”
The Lady Tigers have reached a point where they are, more than ever, expecting to win close matches.
“We’ve have to be able to score,” said Rogers, “and it gets frustrating after a while when we don’t put the ball in the net.”
Next up, the Lady Tigers (4-12, 1-4 in COC play) head to Joplin at 5 p.m. Thursday for a rematch with McAuley at Dover Field Soccer Complex.
