To say the atmosphere inside Carthage High School Thursday evening was charged would be an understatement.

Two programs rich in wrestling tradition went head-to-head in dual competition at Carthage High School.

Seneca’s arsenal this season includes two returning state champions and three wrestlers ranked No. 1 in Class 1 by MissouriWrestling.com. Carthage, meanwhile, has four individuals currently ranked in Class 3, including Trevor Feagans, who is ranked No. 1 in the state at 119 pounds.

Although senior Erick Vargas and freshman Gage Gartner set the tone, so to speak, with a pair of close matches to begin Thursday’s dual, Carthage came up short against Seneca, which rolled to a 52-16 victory.

The Indians earned four pins and one major decision, and received two forfeits to hold off the Tigers, who entertain McDonald County today in a makeup dual from last week at home.

The Tigers, who fell to 3-7 in dual competition this season, wrestled even in several matches, but were unable to finish off opponents.

“Tonight, I was honestly pleased with our effort,” said Kenny Brown, Carthage High School head wrestling coach. “Now, were we outwrestled in some matches, yes, but we didn’t get outworked.”

Seneca, the No. 1 team in Class 1, currently has 11 ranked individuals in 14 weight classes, including Tate Smith, Tim Harner and Colbey Skaggs — all ranked No. 1 in the state at their respective weight.

Skaggs, though, was the only grappler of the three to record a victory, as Harner was unable to wrestle his match because he was overweight, while Carthage’s Nate Kelly upended Tate at 112 pounds.

“The effort was there,” said Brown, “and the drive to compete was there, which I was a little worried because the junior varsity sets the tone, and our junior varsity didn’t show up.”

Kelly, who earned his 100th career victory over the weekend at the Grandview Tournament, made quick work of Tate, earning a 13-0 major decision win.

“That’s a commanding win when you don’t give up any points whatsoever,” said Brown. “Smith is the No. 1 ranked kid in his class and Kelly beat him in two periods.”

The marquee matchup between Feagans and Harner, unfortunately, didn’t take place after Harner checked in overweight. Feagans registered the only pin for Carthage, which lost three middleweight matches by three points or less.

Carthage is set to take on McDonald County, weather permitting, at 6 p.m. today at Carthage High School.
