A late goal in regulation helped the Carthage Lady Tigers secure their first victory of the season with a 1-0 shutout victory Thursday against district rival Hillcrest.
The goal, setup by a blistering cross from Mandolin Smith, came in the 65th minute of regulation, breaking a scoreless tie. As it turned out, the goal — the first of the season by Carthage — was enough for the Lady Tigers to down Hillcrest at Fair Acres Sports Complex.
“We played awfully well against a district opponent,” said Chris Rogers, Carthage soccer coach. “We moved the ball and made quality passes.”
Dealing with gusty conditions, the Lady Tigers, ironically, scored without the benefit of the wind at their backs. But, all things equal, Rogers was thrilled to see the Lady Tigers’ hard work finally pay off.
“The wind kind of played a factor,” said Rogers, who helped start the Lady Tigers’ soccer program last year. “We had other opportunities to score, but Hillcrest used some pressure.”
Phylicia Lewis, who had four saves, registered her first shutout victory of the season after holding Hillcrest scoreless. Hillcrest, which was limited to only four shots on goal, was disrupted by Carthage’s trapping defense.
“They didn’t get off too many quality shots,” said Rogers of Hillcrest. “The girls have really worked hard to get the first win. We kept grinding and finally the ball went in.”
The junior varsity held on for a 3-1 victory over Hillcrest, the first win in program history.
Carthage remains at home to face Carl Junction at 5 p.m. Monday in a makeup match from Thursday, March 25.
