The Missouri State High School Activities Association recently recognized Carthage High School for academic excellence during the winter and spring sports seasons.
A number of Carthage High School athletic teams received credit for outstanding scholastic achievement. In order to be recognized for outstanding achievement, athletic teams must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and up.
In July of last year, MSHSAA increased the minimum academic requirements for grades 9-12, with a new standard of 3.0 units of credit of 80 percent of the maximum-allowable credits, whichever is greater.
In all, 10 Carthage High School teams — five in each season — obtained a GPA of 3.25 or better for scholastic honors, including cheerleading and dance, freshman basketball, varsity wrestling, girls basketball, golf, tennis, freshman baseball, girls track and field and varsity baseball.
Carthage’s cheerleading squad, sponsored by Tysha Roughton, and the dance squad, sponsored by Melanie Bowers, earned cumulative GPAs of 3.25 and 3.26, respectively.
Carthage’s freshman basketball team, headed by assistant coach Nick Pfeifer and head coach Steve Ray, compiled a GPA of 3.28 for the year. Carthage's varsity wrestling program earned a GPA of 3.30 under the direction of head coach Kenny Brown, and the Lady Tigers' freshman basketball team, coached by Tara Williams, finished with a GPA of 3.90.
In the spring, Carthage’s golf team earned outstanding achievement with a cumulative GPA of 3.33 under coach Lowell Catron. Bob Whyte’s tennis team, which advanced to the regional playoffs, earned a GPA of 3.38.
Carthage’s freshman and varsity baseball programs, under coach Nathan Patrick and head coach Mike Godfrey, earned GPAs of 3.40 and 3.53, respectively. Finally, the Lady Tigers’ track and field team finished with a GPA of 3.45 under head coach Andy Youngworth.
Meanwhile, Carthage’s junior varsity and freshman wrestling programs together earned distinguished scholastic achievement with a GPA of 3.10.
Teams must have a GPA of 3.0 to 3.24 to be considered distinguished.
The Tigers’ varsity and junior varsity basketball programs also earned distinguished scholastic achievement by earning a GPA of 3.12.
The boys’ track and field and girls’ soccer teams also earned distinguished honors with GPAs of 3.06
