With summer camp complete, the Carthage High School football team is getting set for the 2009 CHS Football Golf Tournament at Carthage Golf Course.

It has been six years since the benefit golf tournament was created for the Carthage High School football program, and every year the event has received a great response from the community.

Mark Peterson, PGA Professional at Carthage Golf Course, expects this year to be no exception.

“We have been averaging 15-18 four-player teams over the last five years,” said Peterson. “We are hoping to fill the event this year with 25 four-player teams.”

The tournament, slated for Saturday, July 25, will include a putting contest, a football toss and mulligans will be available. The money raised will be used to support the CHS football program.

“I originally established this while coach (Doug) Buckmaster was the Carthage coach,” said Peterson. “Coach (Jon) Guidie wanted us to continue the event and has been very helpful in coordinating players and staff to be part of the event.

“There are many ways to contribute to the football program and this is one more avenue that can help supporters and businesses get involved through golf.”

Tiger football players will be on hand for the duration of the event to assist golfers and participate in several contests.

“The kids will be working the course,” said Guidie. “They will be spotting shots, tending pins and hauling golf bags. We always have had a great turnout.”

Peterson said he, along with everyone involved, would like to see the tournament continue to grow in the future.

“While we have been able to raise funds for the football team and have great camaraderie of those involved, myself, Danny Lambeth, Craig Hart, Mark Gier and Jerry Poston, thought we should try to step it up in several ways,” said Peterson. “Not only are we trying to step up fundraising but also have more interaction of the staff and players with those entered in the tournament.”

The cost, which includes golf, cart, tournament activities, interaction with the 2009 CHS football players, staff and lunch, is $50 per player.

“We will have cash prizes for those winners in each flight,” said Peterson. “We will have closest to the pin prizes and some door prizes as well. The contests are additional fundraisers that will allow participants to interact with the Carthage football players. You might be putting against or with some of the players in a contest or participate in a football throwing contest against them.”
