It's not every Friday night all four teams in The Carthage Press coverage area come away with victories, but Carthage, Webb City, Jasper and Sarcoxie all posted season-opening wins Friday, Aug. 28.
The Carthage Tigers, thanks to a balanced attack, opened up the 2009 season with a 53-14 win over Central Ozark Conference rival Ozark on Friday at Tiger Stadium.
At Cardinal Stadium, the Webb City Cardinals won their season and home opener over Harrisonville with a convincing 33-7 victory.
The Jasper Eagles, under first-year head coach Josh Dirks, survived a blackout at Pierce City (a transformer blew right before the end of the first half, causing a lengthy delay) before hanging on for a 20-19 win. So after one week, the Eagles are 1-0 and 1-0 in Spring River Valley Conference play.
In Ash Grove, the Sarcoxie Bears, who lost to the Pirates in last year's opener, squeaked out a 22-18 win to open the 2009 season.
See Sunday's edition of the Press for full coverage and results of Friday's action.
