Missouri S&T used a strong finish to the 2008 campaign — winning four of its last five games — to record its third winning season in the last four years. That performance also helped the Miners capture their first conference championship in 25 years as they took the Great Lakes Football Conference title.

For head coach Kirby Cannon, the hope is that the Miners’ finish will carry over into the 2009 season as they look to solidify themselves as one of the better teams in the region — a year in which Missouri S&T enters as the pre-season favorite to repeat in the GLFC coaches poll.

“There’s no question that our finish to last season had some carryover,” said Cannon. “We had a terrific spring and a real competitive contest to close out the session.”

The Miners, including Carthage natives Ethan Johns, Owen Johns and Clay Kinman, opened practice two weeks ago in preparation for what will be arguably their toughest schedule since moving to the NCAA Division II independent ranks in 2005.
