The Carthage eighth grade football team was unbeatable this season.
The Tigers concluded the year on Thursday night with a 46-0 victory against Nevada in the A game at K.E. Baker Stadium, earning Carthage the Tri-County Championship.
Carthage wasted no time putting points on the board, scoring in five plays or less on each of the Tigers’ drives. After holding Nevada on the opening possession of the game, the Tigers set the tone for the night, driving 52 yards in five plays and scoring when Tyler Ralston ran it in from three yards out. Alex Derryberry hit Uriah Dame for the two-point conversion, giving Carthage an 8-0 lead.
After another Nevada punt, Carthage took just two plays to go 74 yards for another score, with Kendall Young capping off the drive with a 65-yard touchdown run. Dausen Gourley ran it in for the extra two points, giving Carthage a 16-0 lead.
The Tigers again struck quickly in the second quarter when Derryberry passed to Young for 38 yards on a screen play. That set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Dame.
Derryberry went to the air again on the next Carthage series, connecting with Gourley on a 58-yard touchdown pass. Young’s scored the extra two points for a 30-0 halftime lead.
The Tigers used just a play to add more points after the half. Ralston took an inside handoff and raced 70 yards on the opening play of the third quarter, and Derryberry passed to Andrew Moore in the back of the end zone for the two-point try, putting Carthage up 38-0.
Derryberry added an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter. He then hit Braiden Davis with a quick pass for the two-point conversion to ice the cake.
The victory capped a 6-0 season and Tri-County Championship for the Tigers. Carthage outscored its opponents 246-30, allowing just two offensive touchdowns by opponents all year.
The Carthage B team, meanwhile, lost a heartbreaker to Nevada, 28-22.
Matt Yerington had a 5-yard touchdown run to open things up for the Tigers, and Jess Hettinger added the two-point conversion as Carthage took an early 8-0 lead.
Nevada came right back and scored to tie the game up after the end of the first quarter.
Carthage then marched the ball down the field and Hettinger plowed into the end zone from 11 yards out to regain the lead, and Gavin Huke’s two-point run gave the Tigers a 16-8 advantage.
Again, Nevada would answer, but this time Carthage held on the conversion run and led at the half, 16-14.
Carthage began the second half with a successful onside kick and quickly scored when Huke passed to Brett Williams for 24 yards. But Nevada added two late scores and Carthage’s final effort fell incomplete in the waning seconds.
