Well, it’s 17 years and counting now for Carthage after Webb City captured the Class 4 District 12 championship game Friday with a 6-3 victory over the Tigers at Carl Lewton Stadium.
The Tigers, searching for their first district championship since 1993, trailed 2-0 before tying the game in the third inning with two runs against starter Tyler Burgess.
But, after permitting four hits and five runners over the first three innings, Burgess settled in and, for the most part, held Carthage’s offense in check. In fact, Burgess, who threw a nine-inning complete game against Joplin Monday in the opening round, sat down eight in a row at one point before Levi Snyder led off the seventh with a base hit.
The Cardinals, who captured their first Class 4 district championship in program history, advance to face the District 11 champion in the sectional playoff at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barnes Field.
In two starts in the district tournament, Burgess yielded four runs in 16 innings pitched, three of which came against the Tigers.
“He pitched out of a couple jams, one in the third inning and again in the seventh,” said Shawn Mayes, Webb City head coach, of Burgess. “That’s what we’ve come to expect from Tyler.”
