Sarcoxie’s David Maggard scored two touchdowns while Sarcoxie’s defense held Jasper to one touchdown as the Bears spoiled Jasper’s home opener with a 27-6 win over the Eagles.

Sarcoxie evens its record at 1-1 while Jasper, which was off last weekend, opened the season 0-1.

Sarcoxie’s Charles Vogt opened the scoring in the first quarter with a nifty 14-yard run that saw Vogt reverse his field and scramble around the Jasper’s defense with 4:39 left in the first quarter.

Maggard scored his first touchdown on a seven-yard plunge up the middle with 1:07 left before the half.

Jasper made a game of after the half with a long kickoff return after the Bears were penalized for being late coming out of the locker room.

That set up the Eagles with a short field and the team drove 32 yards, scoring on a seven-yard run by Jasper senior Braden Stefan.

Sarcoxie came back two possessions later with a 15-play, 58-yard drive that ended with Maggard’s second score, a three yard touchdown plunge.

The Bears put the game out of reach with a big play — a 72-yard touchdown run by sophomore Logan Jones with 3:47 left in the game.

Jasper moves on to play Osceola next week while Sarcoxie plays Lockwood.
