Rader Farm park improvements
Posted May 13, 2013
Rader Farm, south of Carl Junction, was the site of the massacre of black Union soldiers by Confederate guerrillas on May 18, 1863. The soldiers were based at the fort in Baxter Springs, Kan., and were taking food from the Rader family farm when Thomas Livingston's Confederate fighters ambushed them. A ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of that event and the subsequent burning of the town of Smithfield in retaliation by Union soldiers on May 19, 1863, will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, May 18.
