Although a snowy winter scene is breathtaking and flowers blooming in the spring are exquisite, there's nothing quite like the beauty of the fall. After a summer of growth, the majestic trees and landscapes break into a symphony of red, orange and yellow. Add to that the crisp autumn air and lack of travelers on the road because vacation season has tapered, and you have the perfect recipe for a motorcycle road trip.
Of course, you can't just hop on your motorcycle and hit the road. Start with a little bit of planning to make the most of your trip. Here is a guide to the essential steps, courtesy of Nationwide Insurance, which offers motorcycle insurance to protect you, your bike and others.
Choose a route: Although you could just pick a destination and let mapping software choose your route, this probably won't take you past the most beautiful scenery. Research the most breathtaking spots for fall colors in your area, and also consider whether you prefer riding in the mountains, along the coast, by rivers, over the plains or through forests. Choose a route that is known for its scenery and that takes you through the types of nature you enjoy.
Plan your overnights: Determine where you'll stay along the way, whether it's with friends, in motels or at campgrounds. Make your reservations in advance so you know you'll have a place to sleep. In summer tourist destinations, campgrounds and motels may shut down after Labor Day. Print out your directions to each place, write down phone numbers and bring a road atlas just in case. You can't rely on getting a phone signal when you're in the wilderness.
Prepare for emergencies: Bring a basic repair kit with you, including a tire patch kit and spare fuses. Emergency flares can be helpful if you break down in the middle of nowhere. Bring your insurance card with you as well, and if you don't have insurance, get motorcycle insurance quotes and buy a policy before your trip. Nationwide Insurance has very competitive rates and lots of available discounts to get you covered for your road trip. Finally, bring some emergency food and water besides your usual snacks, just to make sure you have something on hand.
Document the trip: Bring along a still or video camera to document the trip. You'll be sure to see some breathtaking views as you go, so don't be afraid to stop for a few minutes to snap some pictures. You can even take them on your phone if you don't want to bring a separate camera. Note where you took each photo so you remember the best spots. When you get home, enjoy the memories and share photos with friends, who might want to join you for your next trip.
