CARTHAGE, Mo. -

I was in Carthage at 7 a.m. Saturday to see some of the garage sales and take a few pictures.

I guess I was expecting  the same type of event that Neosho has as most of the people there for their city-wide garage sale get into town at 5 a.m.

But Carthage’s city-wide garage sale is a bit different. Neosho’s is pretty concentrated in a couple of specific areas. Carthage’s is basically all over town, which I think is really good.

But at 7 a.m., there were just a handful of people out and most of the people having garage sales were still getting stuff out.

But around 9 a.m., the garage sale was in full force as the streets were lined with cars on both sides.

I was pleased that The Carthage Press was able to print a map showing where the garage sales were this year. Many of our rack locations sold out and we had to restock them. That makes this general manager smile broadly.

Congratulations to all who held garage sales. I hope that you made a bundle. But more importantly, I hope you got rid of a lot of your “treasures.”

A reminder of a couple of projects The Carthage Press is doing right now.

On the Horizons page, we have a column called “From the Good Old Days.” We have several memories of Carthage written by current and former residents about their years in high school.

We have about a dozen of these stories, but we would love to have a lot more so we can keep this column going indefinitely.

Please send your submissions – no more than 500 words in length – to Buzz Ball, The Carthage Press, 800 W. Central, Carthage, Mo. 64836. Or e-mail it to bball@carthagepress.com.

We also have started the Carthage Press Beauty Spot of the Week. Last week it was at The Sonic Drive-in. This week, it is at 531 W. Chestnut, displaying some beautiful iris.
We need input from our readers regarding future beauty spots. If you would like to nominate a business or residence to be beauty spot of the week, call me at 358-2191 or e-mail me at bball@carthagepress.com.

We want your input in making The Carthage Press what you want it to be.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY – “All the irritations of daily life subject your mind and nerves and then your muscles, to repeated tension. You can work out most of this tension with your exercise program, but if you are smart, you will try to avoid most of the tension to begin with.” – Dr. Leon Root.
