CARTHAGE, Mo. -

Out of sight, out of mind to most of the sheltered persons whose resources may have limits but who mange two or three meals per day and a sheltered cover for the night-time repose, but, noticed or not, the homeless are always with us.  Even in a reasonably resourceful society such as mainstream citizenship in Carthage, they are always present.  They seldom exhibit their own need and rarely disturb the steady pulse of progress throbbing on all sides, but they are real.  They cannot, must not be ignored.  They are God’s creatures.  They are our brothers and sisters.

It is so easy to ignore them and thereby assume they do not exist, but they do and they need compassionate attention.

They find a degree of shelter from elemental discomfort under bridges and in culverts, in vacant houses and abandoned barns, in cardboard boxes and makeshift shelters in public parks and commercial parking lots.

They obtain some sustenance from garbage cans, trash dispensers and commercial give away teasers.  Sometimes they mange to sleep on park benches or stairwells or hidden behind discarded trash containers and heaps of discarded containers behind stores and cafes.

Some seek temporary shelter and sustenance at Christian Crisis Center and the Salvation Army or other similar service centers.  But they are hungry nearly always and desperately in need of health care and hope.

They are our everlasting homeless.

What are we going to do for them?
