CARTHAGE, Mo. -

Dear Editor

We have been living in Carthage for over a year now, and for the most part find Carthage to be a charming small town.

We live in the Historic District near the Downtown area.  This is an area that needs many improvements, and we are fixing up our fixer-upper of a house.

Some neighbors are dong the same. This area of town could be very nice-someday. However, one qualm we have is the noise that High School air-conditioning unit makes. It produces a very loud, shrill and penetrating, whining noise that can be heard on Howard street, south past Chestnut and to the Square 24/7 from early Spring to late Fall. So much for hearing the crickets on a summer evening!

I attempted to talk to several city officials and was tossed around until I talked to the Superintendent of Carthage schools, who has been helpful and generous with his time. Unfortunately, it has come to the school not being able to do anything.

New air-conditioning units are very pricey. We are almost to the point of selling our house because this noise is driving us crazy. I do not think it is ‘right’ for this sort of noise to go on, especially considering this area IS residential. I really wish this city would do something about this problem.

This may appear to be a trivial affair, however it is yet another reason why people are leaving this city!
