On Sept. 30, 2008, Elaine Lewis passed from this life to join her beloved husband, Tex, in the presence of their Lord.

Elaine was born Aug. 10, 1930, on a homestead near Poplar, Mont.  Her parents were Marion and Linnie White.

When she was 5 years old, she and her mother moved to Coyville, Kan. Elaine’s mother remarried and she was adopted by Hoyt Greathouse.

When Elaine was in high school she and her family moved to Bozeman, Mont., where she completed her high school diploma. After high school she worked as a telephone operator.  Elaine met and married James K “Tex” Lewis, a graduate student of Montana State University. After Tex completed his Master’s Degree, they moved to Brookings, S.D. Tex worked as an Animal Science Professor at South Dakota State University.

Elaine was a homemaker, raising four children. She was active in the church and community. She taught both children and ladies Bible classes. Elaine also maintained and managed two college student apartments.

When Tex retired from South Dakota State University they moved to Carthage, Mo., where they purchased 30 acres.  They gardened, planted trees and enjoyed feeding and observing the wildlife. Elaine continued her service as an elder’s wife at the Elm Road Church of Christ in Carthage and later at West Union Church of Christ in Diamond, Mo.

She is survived by four children, Priscilla Moreau of Abilene, Texas, Mark Lewis of Minneapolis Minn., Sheri Madill of Bowling Green, Ky., and Syerra Conklin of Carthage, Mo.  She is also survived by 15 grandchildren that were a special part of her life.

Memorial Services will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at the Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel.

Services will be under the Direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
