John Arthur Young, 75, of Carthage, Mo., formerly of Sarcoxie, Mo., departed this life on Sunday, Sept., 21, 2008,at his home.
John entered this life on March 13, 1933, in Hurley, Mo., son of the late Fred and Susie (Slaughter) Young.
In 1939 the family moved to Aurora, Mo. John served his country faithfully in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1953.
On May 26, 1956, in Springfield, Mo., he was united in marriage to Donna M. McColm. They have four sons.
John was a self-employed entrepreneur for most of his life. He owned and operated Young’s IGA in Sarcoxie from 1964 to 1975 and after selling, the family moved to Tulsa, Okla., where John owned a convenience store. They later returned to the Sarcoxie area and for six years John operated the Young’s Quick Stop in Diamond. In 1988 he opened Young’s Deli and Donut in Sarcoxie. He officially retired in 1994 and in 2004, he and Donna moved to Carthage.
He was a member of the Victory Baptist Church in Carthage.
His parents, two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
John is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Donna Young of the home; four sons, Michael Joe Kent and wife, Aline, of Pelham, N.C., John Young, Jr. and wife, Nancy, of Reeds, Mo., David Young and wife, Sonya, of Carthage, Mo., and Fred Young and wife, Laura, of Blue Springs, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; four sisters, Freda Ethridge of Chiefland, Fla., Mary Lou Jackson of Nixa, Mo., Virginia Boswell of Montclair, Calif., and Betty Brown of Aurora, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, in the Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home Chapel in Sarcoxie, Mo., with Michael Kent and Fred Young officiating. Burial will follow in the Sarcoxie Cemetery.
Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Greg Stotler, Josh Phillips, Chris Kuykendall, Jonathan Kent, David Kent, Todd Young, Tyler Young and Kendall Young.
