Hershel J. Heck, 84, a  Jasper County lifetime area resident, passed away at 6:35 p.m., Monday, June 22, 2009, at McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital.

He was born on April 4, 1925, in Newton County.  Hershel was the son of Earl and Grace “Speak” Heck. He retired from the Sarcoxie “Juvenile” Shoe Factory.  Hershel farmed South East of Carthage and worked at the Hurricane Car Wash. He was a member of the Dudman Springs Church.

Hershel married Betty Jo Block on July 15, 1955, in Miami, Okla. She survives.

He is also survived by one sister Marie Zeltner of Webb City, Mo.; one brother in-law, Charles L. Block and wife Bobbie of Reeds, Mo.; four sister in-laws; Anna May Hunsucker, Aurora, Mo.; Mary Jane Barnes and husband Robert of Springfield, Mo.; Louise Oberbeck and husband Darel of Niangua, Mo.; Roberta Lewis and husband Richard, Paola, Kan.; also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Hershel was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Dorothy and husband Alfred Thurston; father and mother in-law, Samuel C. and Ernestine Block; one sister in-law, Billie Jean Miller and four brother in-laws, Robert Block, Sam Block, Max Hunsucker, and Ralph Zeltner.

Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 24, 2009, Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at the Sarcoxie Cemetery.  

Contributions may be made to the Donors Choice in Hershel’s memory. 

Arrangements are under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
