Austin A. Harrison, 97 of Plano, TX and formerly of Joplin.
Born in Stockton, MO, Mr. Harrison was raised in Carthage. He graduated from Carthage High School where he excelled as a student/athlete.
He founded and developed KSWM radio and KSWM television Channel 12 (now KODE) in Joplin. He created and managed the popular family resort, now a private residential community, known as Limberlost in Racine, MO.
Active in Joplin civic affairs, Mr. Harrison was an elected Member of the Joplin School Board, a Member of the Lions Club, and was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Harrison was a recognized and sought after authority on communications networks. During WWII, he worked on development of then top-secret radar systems for aircraft.
An MBA graduate of Harvard Business School, he was a consultant to NASA’s space program. He managed and developed Channel 38 (now WSBK) in Boston.
He worked at Fidelity Investments to develop several new business lines, including mutual funds. He secured FCC licenses to support a microwave communications company he co-founded and now known as MCI.
Mr. Harrison raised 8 children with Eleanor Pingree Harrison, pre-deceased, plus 29 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, and 5 great, great grandchildren. Surviving children are: Marilyn Monschke of Plano, TX, Mac Harrison of Wakefield, RI, Elaine Ferguson of Marion, MA, Gail Panza of Edmond, OK, and David Harrison of Sandwich, MA. From a second marriage to Dorothy Rollins Warden Harrison, also pre-deceased, Mr. Harrison is survived by step-sons Robert Warden of Chicago and Rick Warden of Carthage, MO.
Funeral services will be held Saturday June 10 at 11 a.m. at Weston United Methodist Church, 377 North Avenue, Weston, MA 02493.
