Illness forced officials in Avilla to close the school in the small, eastern Jasper County community for a few days, according to the president of the Avilla Board of Education.

Kyle Slichenmyer, president of the board, said he didn’t have any details as to how many children were sick or how long the school would be closed, but he did confirm that the school would close “for a couple of days.”

“We had several kids sick and we wanted to give them a couple of days to get over it,” Slichenmyer said.

No one answered the phone at the Avilla administrative offices Tuesday morning and Superintendent Scott Blake was not available for comment.

The district serves about 150 students in the Kindergarten-eighth grades in its building on Sarcoxie Street in Avilla.
