Criminal charges were filed in a previously unsolved burglary case in Jasper County because of Missouri’s new expanded DNA law, which took affect Aug. 28.
The law requires suspects arrested on suspicion of a violent felony, sexual offense or burglary to provide a DNA sample on arrest.
Previous state laws in Missouri required convicted felons to give DNA samples upon conviction or prior to release from jail.
Officials said in a media release on Thursday that this was the second time officials have made a match on a DNA sample taken upon arrest in the state, but the Jasper County case was the first resulting in any criminal charge.
The law was sponsored by Missouri State Rep. Marilyn Ruestman, R-Joplin.
It also requires that the DNA sample be destroyed if charges are not filed, if charged are dropped or if the suspect is acquitted.
