The historic caged elevator at the Jasper County Courthouse in Carthage is still out of order and repairs are expected to be finished by the end of the second week in June.

Jasper County Western District Commissioner Darieus Adams said county crews removed several inches of concrete under the elevator shaft to allow a contractor to make the needed repairs.

Adams said using county crews to remove the concrete saved the county money, but the repairs will still cost the county $27,888.

Adams said the elevator's emergency braking system was declared insufficient by an inspector back in April, and the elevator was shut down.

He said the parts have been ordered and a technician will be available sometime between June 9 and June 14 to make the repairs.

Kone Elevator Company, Springfield is the contractor making the repairs.

"He didn't know how many days it would take to install the parts," Adams said.

In the meantime, people who have business on the second or third floors of the courthouse but cannot get there on their own can go to a table at the base of the handicapped access ramp in the basement of the courthouse and use a telephone to call for assistance.
