The battle is on!

A new competition is under way at the Carthage YMCA called the Battle of the Bulge. This contest enables community members to receive inspiring support from peers and coaches to lose weight, and of course beat the other teams to win prizes.

“It's fun because we're doing it in a competitive manner,” said Tericia Mixon, membership and fitness director for the Y. “There is excitement among the participants due to the contest itself, but this is also a service to the community to help them strive for a healthy life.”

Mixon said this is the first time the local Y has hosted an event of this caliber, and so far, has received a warm welcome with 120 people signed up. The first weigh-in was Jan. 9 for this 12-week competition, and the next meetings will be held the first Monday of the month.

“We'll have monthly weigh-in's with incentive prizes to keep the momentum going,” Mixon said. “This program gives the participants team support, coaches' motivation, incentive prizes as well as personal goals. We'll also have special guest speakers, like a dietitian and massage therapist.”

To keep the contest fair, participants are judged by body mass and what percentage of body fat is lost during the program. By the end of the “battle,” Mixon says she hopes to award the winners while instilling another motivation to continue to live a healthy, and improved, lifestyle.

The next weigh-in for the Battle of the Bulge will be Monday, Feb. 6, and the graduation event will be at 5:30 p.m. April 16 at the Carthage Y.
