A familiar face has accepted the Carthage R-9 Foundation director's position.

Amy Grimes, who was born and raised in Carthage, was announced last week as the new foundation director. In December 2011, John Dillard had accepted the position but due to a family emergency had to regrettably decline the position. Foundation president Kelly Hartley said the board members were confident Grimes would go the extra mile in all efforts for the Carthage school district.

“She is fabulous,” Hartley said of Grimes. “She is going to be a great fit for this position and we are just thrilled she accepted.”

Grimes, who is retiring from teaching second grade at Mark Twain Elementary School this year, said it wasn't a hard decision.

“I'm excited,” she said. “I'm going to miss the kids terribly, but I want to be flexible without giving something up for R-9. I have ideas for the district, and just want to be that go-between for the schools and foundation. I want to provide awareness that the foundation has resources for the students.”

Grimes said her ideas in district-wide fundraising involved recognizing outstanding alumni, volunteers and students throughout the district. Also, offering ways students can give back to the school system and show appreciation for their favorite educators.

“We have an amazing group of people on the board,” Grimes said. “They are interested and hard working, and I'm anxious to get started.”

Grimes was a 1982 Carthage High School graduate, and attended William Woods College and SMSU. She has taught for the Carthage School District for 25 years. Grimes said she took pride in knowing she worked for her former kindergarten teacher, Laurel Rosenthal.

She is married to Jimmy, and they have four children: Katie Pence, Emily Pence, Megan Grimes Adams and Taylor Grimes. They also have a granddaughter, Jenevieve Adams, 3. When not at work, Amy enjoys family activities, running, gardening and traveling.
