Today is the final day to file for election to seats on the Carthage City Council and the Carthage School Board.
Three people have filed for six open seats on the Carthage City Council as of the end of the day Monday, while three people have filed for two open seats on the Carthage R-9 Board of Education.
City Council
No one has filed for three of six open seats on the Carthage City Council as of the end of the day Monday.
Incumbents are Kirby Newport in Ward 1, T.J. Teed in Ward 2, John Studebaker in Ward 3, John Cooper in Ward 4 and Brent Greninger in Ward 5.
The sixth seat is in Ward 2, which has remained unfilled for most of the past year. The person who runs for or is appointed to that seat will serve a one-year term.
Newport and Studebaker have filed for reelection to their seats, while Lee Carlson, who represented Ward 4 for a year from April 2010 to April 2011, has filed to run for that seat.
Candidates can sign up at the Carthage City Hall, on the east side of the Square. People interested in running for council must pay a $25 filing fee or gather 25 signatures from people living in their Ward.
Carthage City Council meets twice a month. Each council member must also serve on two of five standing council committees and serve as liaison to two of nine boards of organizations that receive city money.

The number of candidates running for the two three-year seats on the Carthage R-9 Board of Education stands at three as of Monday. Sheila VonHolten filed to run against incumbents Lee Elliff Pound and Michael Goolsby for the seats in the April 3 election.
The two candidates with the largest numbers of votes will take the seats.
The school board meets once a month.
