Homeowners, emergency personnel, and construction/demolition crews should use extreme caution when excavating or demolishing structures. Prior to demolition or use of construction equipment for cleanup, natural gas service should be shut off and natural gas risers (the piping that exits the ground to enter structures) should be capped and marked to avoid damage. Contact MGE to confirm that service has been shut off. Use extreme caution during excavation or clean-up operations to ensure that you do not damage natural gas lines. An uncontrolled release of natural gas may cause an explosion or fire.
Before beginning any demolition or cleanup with construction equipment to a structure impacted by the tornado in Joplin, please call MGE’s Joplin engineering office at 417-626-4834 daily between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
For other customer service inquires, contact MGE’s Customer Service line at 1-800-582-1234.
If you plan to excavate or dig, note that there are many buried utility services around homes, including water lines, natural gas lines, sewer lines, electric lines, and telephone cables. It is critical to “Call Before You Dig” to Missouri One Call at 1-800-DIG-RITE (1-800-344-7483) or just dial “811.” www.mo1call.com.
If you smell natural gas, call 911 or MGE at 1-800-582-0000.
Act quickly if you smell a natural gas odor. MGE adds an odorant to natural gas (it smells similar to a skunk or rotten eggs) so that natural gas can be detected and identified quickly and easily. If you smell natural gas:
LEAVE your house or the area immediately —
DO NOT activate your electric garage door opener to leave your house.
DO NOT turn light switches or other electrical switches on or off, including the garage door opener.
DO NOT try to re-light a pilot light or strike a match. Get out of the house and the area immediately!
DO NOT continue to operate machinery.
CALL MGE from your neighbor’s house or when you are away from the area —
DO NOT use your cellular phone to call MGE unless you are outside and away from your house and the area. Using any type of telephone, including a cellular phone, could ignite the leaking natural gas.
