One brother is in jail while the other is recovering from bullet wounds to both legs and the loss of blood after an argument turned bad on Wednesday.

Jasper County Sheriff Lt. Ron Thomas said Louie Taylor, 42, was arrested and charged with first-degree domestic violence after the incident. The other brother, Lon Taylor, 39, was treated and released after one small-caliber bullet pierced both his legs, causing the loss of blood.

“There was a lot of blood at the scene and in his girlfriend’s car,” Thomas said. “This could have turned out a lot worse, we could have someone dead in this incident very easily.”

Thomas said the incident started for law officers at 9:23 a.m. Wednesday when a woman flagged an officer down at the intersection of Central and Garrison avenues.

She told the officers her boyfriend had been shot and officers rendered first aid and called the emergency medical services.

Thomas said officers initially thought Lon Taylor had been shot twice, but subsequent medical examination shows he was hit with one bullet that pierced both of his legs.

Thomas said officers believe Lon Taylor was hit with .22 caliber or .32 caliber bullet from a revolver.

Before he was taken to the hospital, the victim told officers he was shot by his brother at a residence in rural Jasper County during a domestic violence incident.

Thomas said officers went to the home at 16516 State Highway 37, less than a mile south of the intersection of Baseline Road and Highway 37 in northeast Jasper County, and talked to Lon Taylor’s brother, Louie Taylor.

Thomas said an argument between the two brothers apparently escalated into a exchange of gunfire with Louis Taylor firing at least three rounds from a revolver and Lon Taylor returning fire with at least two rounds from a shotgun loaded with birdshot.

Thomas said Louie Taylor may have been slightly injured with birdshot grazing his face, but he did not seek medical treatment.

Thomas said Louie Taylor was still in custody in the Jasper County Jail as of Thursday morning awaiting the filing of charged.
