Water in both solid and liquid forms is predicted to fall on Carthage and the surrounding area on Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Springfield.

The weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for Jasper and most surrounding counties from Thursday morning until midnight Friday night.

The advisory calls for rain and sleet to begin sometime today, changing over to snow late Thursday and into Friday.

The weather service said it expects one to three inches of heavy, wet snow to fall across the area.

“While the snow will remain very wet and most of the accumulations are expected in the grassy areas, some accumulation on roadways will be possible causing slick areas to develop and making travel hazardous,” the advisory said. “A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow and sleet will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.”

Daytime temperatures in the mid-30s mean this week’s snow may melt quickly but another storm system with another shot of accumulating snow is predicted for Sunday and Monday.

Eric Wise, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield, said Sunday’s storm could be bigger than today’s snowfall if the storm travels at a certain speed and direction.

“Everything depends on the track this storm takes,” Wise said. “If it goes further south, we might not get as much snow. If it goes further north, we might get more rain. If it stays on its current track and speed, it could be a bit bigger than the storm on Thursday and Friday.”
