The Missouri Army National Guard helped honor 14 area Vietnam-era Veterans with medallions, medals and certificates of appreciation at the Guard’s Joplin armory as part of the state’s Veterans Recognition Program on Memorial Day.

Gov. Matt Blunt attended the ceremony to express his appreciation to those who served during the Vietnam War.

“On Memorial Day, we remember all those who have served, but we are here today to celebrate the contributions of a specific group — Vietnam Veterans,” Blunt said. “The cause you fought for was a noble endeavor for which you should be proud.”

Among those honored was 1st Sgt. Steven F. Wiles of Carthage. Wiles retired from Marine Corps after 23 years of service. He said it was a proud occasion.

“Regardless of what happened in the past, I’ve been proud of my service all along,” Wiley said. “After today, I can let those proud feelings out a little more.”

The Missouri Veterans Recognition Program began in 1919, honoring 82,500 Veterans who served in the Spanish-American War, Mexican Border Service and World War I. Since 2000, more than 58,000 Missouri Veterans who fought in World War II and the Korean War have been recognized, and since 2006, more than 17,000 Vietnam-era Veterans have also been honored.

Veterans interested in checking their eligibility for the award can visit the Missouri Guard’s Web site at www.moguard.com. The eligibility requirements and applications can be found by clicking on the Programs tab and scrolling down to the “Veterans Awards” section. The Missouri National Guard will provide ceremonies for all Veterans who request them. Call 573-638-9651 or toll-free 866-834-3431 for more information.
