CARTHAGE, Mo. -

Rattling chains and floating white sheets may not be filling the air, but spooky things are going on at the Kendrick House.

A group of paranormal investigators spent several hours Saturday at the pre-Civil War home on North Garrison Street using digital recorders, low-light cameras and other electronic gadgets to search for evidence of unusual activity - and they found it.

"Tonight we found a spirit named Robert," said Patches Isula, a medium with the Branson Paranormal Research Society. "Robert is his first name, but I call him Mr. Robert out of respect. I'd say he was alive in the late 1800s. I could see him in a black suit and vest with an old watch hanging out of his pocket. He looked very dignified.

"Also we went upstairs and used the K-2 meter to communicate with a little girl. We got her to respond and actually got her to play a game with us."

A K-2 meter is a device used to record and measure electromagnetic energy.

Isula and her husband, Sonny, were two of seven people with the Branson Paranormal Society who visited the Kendrick House on Saturday.

Patches Isula said this was her third trip to the Kendrick House, which was built from 1849-1854 by the Rankin Family out of bricks made by slave labor.

The house survived the Civil War, which saw Jasper County turned into a battleground and most structures in Carthage burned to the ground.

Patches Isula said the house is the subject of an ongoing study by the paranormal group to contact as many spirits as possible at the home.

She said she has personally contacted as many as eight spirits in the house, and the spirits of a number of soldiers outside the home.
I

sula said in a previous visit, a spirit left a musket ball in her vehicle.

She said she's felt the spirits of soldiers tugging at her feet as she stood in the backyard of the Kendrick House.

Patches Isula said the house doesn't actually qualify as haunted.

"Most of the time we don't call a house haunted unless someone has seen a physical presence, unless someone sees an apparition or hears voices," Isula said. "We've recorded paranormal activity on our K-2 recorder and I've contacted spirits, but we haven't had any physical manifestations."
