A dog was miraculously saved from harm, but caused injuries to others, when it caused a pileup on I-44 at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

Four cars were involved and three were damaged in the collision in I-44’s eastbound lane at around mile marker 20.

Carthage Fire Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Carthage Emergency Services and M & M Wrecker all responded to the pileup.

Officials said a dog wandering back and forth across the road caused the collision when the lead vehicle swerved to miss it. After the wreck, the dog was still wandering around on the highway before it was collected.

Traffic on I-44 was reduced to one lane between mile markers 19 and 20.2. At least one patient was transported to McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital for treatment.
