An autopsy on the body of a baby believed to be Eddie Salazar Jr., 8 months, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office in Columbia.

Carthage Police Chief Greg Dagnan said he’s virtually certain the baby is Salazar Jr., who was reported mission late Thursday by his father Eddie Salazar Sr., but investigators need forensic proof before confirming the identity of the baby.

Salazar Sr., 28, is being held on one count of misdemeanor filing a false police report but Dagnan said he is the primary suspect in the death of his young son.

“Since Mr. Salazar is charged and is being held on $100,000 bond, that will allow us to do a bit more investigating and do the autopsy before seeking more charges,” Dagnan said in a news conference at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. “We’ve been keeping the prosecutor informed of every step we’ve taken and we’ll write everything up and send it to him for charges. I won’t speculate at this time what charges we will seek or what will be filed.”
