Not many people can say that being at work feels like home.
Additionally, not many people can say the one and only job they’ve ever had has been in the very same place where their life began.
However, that is exactly the case of Sandra Myers.
Myers, who was recently recognized for her 40 years of service at McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital, was born at the same hospital where she is now in her 41st year as a hard working, dependable employee according to her boss, McCune-Brooks CFO Tony Wright.
“She’s wonderful, precise and responsible,” Wright said. “She’s extremely dependent. I think in the 10 years we’ve worked together she’s been sick maybe two days. She’s always here, and she’s a sweetheart. I wish there were more people like Sandra.”
Myers said she felt privileged to receive the service award.
“It’s an honor,” a humble Myers said. “Anytime you’re recognized, it feels good.”
After graduating high school in Carthage, Myers interviewed for the switchboard position at McCune-Brooks where she was hired on the spot and never looked back.
She then moved on to the patient charges position, and then to her current spot as payroll director in 1979.
Myers said what she loves most about her job is it constantly keeps her on her toes.
“There’s never a dull moment when you work in a hospital,” she said. “It’s a very interesting job, and there’s always something going on or something coming around the corner.”
Myers, who loves to travel with her family – particularly her niece and nephew – when she’s not at the hospital, credits her tenure to the fact that McCune-Brooks feels just like home.
“I’m a very family-orientated person, and this is a very family-orientated work environment,” she said. “The people I’ve met in my time here have been the greatest reward. It feels like home.”
Infection control nurse and patient advocate, Pat Bearden, has worked with Myers for 36 of the 40 years and calls her personality infectious.
“You just feel good when you’re around her,” Bearden said. “She always has a big smile for everyone, and even when she’s upset or stressed, you can’t tell it. She’s a joy to be around.”
Bearden adds that Myers is the most personable employee in the office.
“She is the only person who knows everybody in this entire hospital by name – and I mean everybody,” Bearden said. “She never forgets a birthday either. She’s the type of colleague that everyone needs around.”
