She's on another adventure this year, and the goal will be the same.

Shelby Shores, a fourth grader at Mark Twain Elementary School, is at it again this year as the Carthage ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Her role in the association is to promote awareness for this cause in fundraising and gearing up for the MDA telethon. As an ambassador, this local girl is representing 16 counties in Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas. Shelby's mother, Claire, said her daughter will one busy girl this year.

“Oh yes, I'm proud of her,” Claire said. “She's understanding why we go to places, and getting so excited for camp and the telethon – She loves it.”

The first of several fundraising efforts will begin Feb. 14 with the shamrocks at local Lowe’s, Wal-Greens, Price- Cutters, Taco Town and Wilkinson's Pharmacy. Those interested may purchase a shamrock in Shelby’s honor and put display it anywhere. Shelby is planning on promoting her campaign at the Harley Davidson Wine Tasting on March 31, which will also be the last day in the shamrocks effort.

Shelby will also have a team in the Muscle Walk held April 14 in Springfield, Mo. Happening in Carthage, Shelby will be at the Carthage Mo Lock Up April 26. Lacey Washburn, executive director for the MDA office in Joplin, said people like Shelby are what make a difference.

“She did a great job last year,” Washburn said. “The neat thing about it is the sponsors know her smile, and they keep up with how she is – they know her, and that's what makes it fun.”

For anyone wishing to follow Shelby's progress this year, find “Shelby's Adventures” on Facebook.

The MDA is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research and providing financial aid to those in need. Those unable to donate through the upcoming telethon are welcome to make contributions to the Joplin MDA location at 825 S. Rangeline Rd. The office may be reached at 417-781-8600 and on Facebook under “MDA Joplin Tri-States Chapter.”
