These sisters get along just fine.

Early Tuesday morning, Cahlynn and Madelynn Capps, sisters in 4-H, were placing water in their rabbits' cages in preparation for a hot day at the Jasper County Youth Fair.

“It’s going to be a hot one this year,” Cahlynn said as she tied a bowl to the cage.

Cahlynn said keeping the furry critters cool is an important task during the fair.

“It’s pretty easy as long as you pay attention, but if you slip for a minute they can get too hot,” she said. “People have really taken care of their rabbits so we haven’t run into that.”

To beat the heat is only one of the advantages to showing up early. The Capps sisters also want to make sure their rabbits are used to their new environment well ahead of the show. When show time comes, Cahlynn said it’s educational because the judges will inform the participants on how to improve their rabbits.

“It’s pretty fun,” Cahlynn said. “Some do it for fun, some do it for the knowledge … I do it for both.”
The Capps sisters will compete against each other in some categories, but it’s all in good fun. Cahlynn says they help each other and share tips.

This year will make the fourth year the sisters have participated in the fair together. Not only in the rabbits show, but also in the non-animal exhibits. Cahlynn, a freshman at Carthage High School, has educational posters in vet science and child development. Madelynn, a seventh grader at the Carthage Junior High School, is in cake decorating and photography as well.

The Capps sisters will be at the fair all week with their six rabbits on display. Residents in the local area are invited to come out and enjoy these creatures and learn more about them: such as O’Ryan, the Jersey Wooly, who has a shy personality.

“It’s a learning experience we can do over the summer,” Cahlynn said. “It’s your payoff for the work you’ve done in 4-H … It’s really great to be here.”
