The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office maintains the only law enforcement explosive detection K9 in the four state area.

During the past two months, Corporal Matt Smith and his K9 partner “Lisa” have been called to respond to six separate potential bomb threats in the area.  K9 Lisa’s primary job is to sniff out the odor of explosives and show an alert to her handler, if she finds an odor she’s been trained to detect.

K9 Lisa has also been trained to track fleeing suspects by following their tracks with her nose.  K9 Lisa can also locate lost or evidence items during an article search.

She is also trained to search out burglary suspects that may be hiding in a home or business.

K9 Lisa and her partner, Cpl. Smith, have been a nationally certified K9 team for over three years.

The team was recognized by the Department of Homeland Security and TSA in September of 2010 for the bomb searches they do in partnership with the Joplin Regional Airport.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s K9 Division does numerous PR events each year for church groups, schools, safety fairs … they’re always willing to show the public how well the dogs work and how well they work as a team.
