Detective Chris Carriger traveled more than 6,000 miles to honor his boss, Sheriff Archie Dunn, with an award on Monday.

Although the travel was of a digital nature, the significance of his presence was not lost on the deputies and staff of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department. Carriger appeared thanks to a remote video feed from Baghdad, Iraq, where he is deployed with the 1138th Military Police Company of the Missouri Army National Guard.

Carriger, along with representatives of the National Committee for Employer Support of Guard and Reserve, were on hand to honor Dunn with an award for his service to and support of the military personnel on his staff.

ESGR works to educate employers and employees about their rights and responsibilities regarding employment of former and current members of the National Guard and Army Reserve.

Dunn received the Patriotic Employer award for his employment of eight guardsmen and reservists, and for how easily he allows them to move in and out of employment while deployed.

“It’s always nice to have someone who works for you while you’re gone,” said Carriger through his remote feed. “There’s nothing words can do to say what it means to us.”

“Without the support of employer’s like yourself, the National Guard wouldn’t be what it is,” said Lieutenant Monte Devault, Springfield, Carriger’s commanding officer. “Sheriff, my hat’s off to you.”
