CARTHAGE, Mo. -

Carthage native and CHS graduate Elam Alumbaugh and many of his family members experienced a once-in-a-lifetime event Saturday afternoon.

Alumbaugh, CW2 Pilot with the Florida Army National Guard, was transporting one of three CH-47 Delta Chinook helicopters from Fort Sill, Okla., to Rochester, N.Y., for delivery to the New York National Guard. The course the helicopters were taking just happened to allow Alumbaugh to fly over Carthage and more specifically the family business of Alumbaugh Construction Co.

“We were only about 15 miles off course,” Alumbaugh said. “This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it was a lot of fun.”
