JOPLIN, Mo. -

A disagreement between the owner of a trucking company and his ex-partner led to Thursday morning’s murder – suicide in northern Newton County.

The shooting victim was identified as 23-year-old Rustin Dewitt, with the alleged shooter identified as Marian Naroznik, 56, of Wentworth.

“It was all over a dispute over who owed what financial partner,” Copeland said. “It’s crazy. Not enough to kill anybody over, that’s for sure.”

The incident began at about 9:15 a.m. Thursday when Naroznik allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint in Wentworth, forcing her to drive to Doin’ Time Trucking, which operated out of a trailer located at the intersection of Route FF and Brookside Drive just within the Newton County line.

Once there, Naroznik released the woman and went inside the trailer. There, he confronted Rustin Dewitt, who lived in the trailer. Dewitt called his father, Richard Dewitt, who was a former partner of the alleged shooter. Richard Dewitt came and ordered Naroznik to leave. The man refused, and Dewitt then called the sheriff.

The older Dewitt then went into the parking lot, where he saw several muzzle flashes from the window. Deputies arriving at the scene noted the two bullet holes in a window, and tried to make contact with the people inside. They could not, and used a “flash-bang” device to gain entry. There, they found the bodies of the two men.

Copeland said a total of five rounds were fired from a five-shot .38 caliber revolver. However, each man was shot only once: Rustin Dewitt in the left side, and Naroznik in the head. Two of the other rounds went through a window of the trailer, while a third went through the mobile home itself, the sheriff said.
