A traffic stop in Carthage led to the arrest of a man who had been in the U.S. illegally for about four months, according to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.
In a written release, Sheriff Archie Dunn said officers arrested Valentin Castaneda, 33, for forgery and taken to the Jasper County Jail in Carthage.
The release said a deputy stopped a vehicle at Highway 96 and Java Street for a traffic violation and took the identifications of the driver and the passengers.
The deputy noticed that one identification looked suspicious and determined it was a fake.
The driver and remaining passengers were released and the driver was issued a warning for the traffic violation.
Castaneda was arrested and taken to the jail in Carthage. He was charged on Monday with one felony count of forgery and faces bond of $3,000.
The sheriff's department also said Castaneda is awaiting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.
