Monday was not a typical day at the office for Carthage Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Reed.
Reed and five other Carthage R-9 employees – including Assistant Superintendent of Schools Susan Taber and four teachers – were honored for their years of service with a reception. All six are retiring at the end of the school year.
“It was a pretty emotional day,” said Reed. “ At least a lot more than your typical work day. It was a great time for reflection and fellowship.”
Joining Reed and Taber in retiring this year are Pat Brown from Steadley Elementary; Donna Linn and Linda Williams, both from Fairview Elementary; and Fran Wallain from the junior high.
“It is a lot of fun when a lot of people I have worked with for 16 years come by and offer their congratulations,” said Reed. “I was very touched at the number of staff, former board members and family who were there. It was just a lot of fun to be surrounded by people who I care about and who care about me.”
As he gears up for his final graduation exercises, Reed said it is a different feeling.
“Of course, as in every job, there are some things that I will miss a lot,” said Reed. “Graduation is one of those things.”
Carthage High School graduation is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.
