Jasper County has been granted $292,400 of federal stimulus money to install new lighting as well as heating/air upgrades inside four Carthage-based Jasper County facilities, commissioners said.

According to Commissioner Jim Honey, such technologically advanced lighting, heating and air systems were installed at the Joplin-based courthouse facility and “it’s saved us a ton of money.”

Now the federal grant money will provide similar upgrades at four Carthage locations, including the Jasper County Courthouse, the old bank building, the health department, and at the Jasper County Jail. The antiquated systems at these locations have long needed replacing.

“You can adjust the air sitting at a computer,” said Presiding Commissioner John Bartosh said of the anticipated changes. “This will certainly pay for itself.”

County officials mailed in the application for the funds earlier this week, and the federal money should be back in the area within weeks, said commissioner Darieus Adams.

Due to the proximity of the July fourth holiday, there will be no Jasper County Commissioner’s meeting next Thursday.
