CertainTeed Corporation announced this week it will close its vinyl siding and vinyl accessory extrusion operation at its manufacturing facility in Joplin.
Over the next 60 days the plant will gradually wind down operations with closure by March 30. The closing will impact approximately 90 employees.
Mark Rayfield, president of CertainTeed’s Siding Products Group, informed Joplin employees of the decision this morning. He indicated the decision to close is due to a combination of a continued slow housing market and a poor outlook for 2012, which has led to an ongoing market decline in demand for siding products and industry-wide production overcapacity.
“It’s never easy closing a facility, particularly one that has performed so admirably over the years,” Rayfield said. “I want to thank all of the affected employees for their many years of dedication to our business. This closing is in no way a reflection of the quality and safety efforts of these individuals who have given their very best, day in and day out. We will work very hard with them and local employment agencies to find opportunities at other CertainTeed plants or other local businesses.”
Prior to making this decision, Rayfield indicated the company analyzed all aspects of its siding business to find ways of more effectively streamlining costs, maximizing productivity and finding new customers to absorb the available capacity.
“All of our plants, including Joplin, have accomplished a great deal, but regrettably, demand just isn’t there, especially in the markets the Joplin plant serves.”
In addition to Joplin, CertainTeed operates vinyl siding production facilities in Jackson, Mich.; Hagerstown, Md., and Claremont, N.C. as well as a molded polymer products facility in McPherson, Kan. and a cellular PVC trim plant in Social Circle, Ga.
