Carthage police say they're investigating the death of a five-month-old boy that was first reported shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday at an apartment at 615 E. Airport Drive.

Carthage Community Policing Officer Chad Dininger said the call came in to 911 as a five-month-old male child not conscious and not breathing.

“Upon arrival, officers and EMS confirmed that the child was deceased,” Dininger said in a written release. “Carthage Police Investigators with the assistance of Missouri State Highway Patrol are currently in an open investigation into the death of the child. No arrests have been made and an autopsy has been scheduled to assist in the investigation.”

Dininger said he an autopsy on the child has been scheduled for Monday, and that procedure will help determine the direction of the investigation.

“Usually we get some preliminary results from an autopsy pretty quick and those will go a long way to determining which direction the investigation goes, and whether it continues at all,” Dininger said. “We're not releasing the names of the child or the family to prevent any accusations until we determine whether to continue the investigation or whether any criminal charges will be filed.”
