An Asbury man was killed and a woman seriously injured in a crash involving a car and a train shortly before noon Wednesday just south of Asbury.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the accident happened at 11:45 a.m., Wednesday at County Road 300 and the railroad crossing about a mile south of Asbury.

The driver of a 1995 Toyota Camera, Jose, Morales-Pereida, 47, Asbury, was killed, and the passenger, Francisca A. Neriz, 48, also of Asbury, was taken by ambulance to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin with what the patrol called serious injuries.

The patrol said Morales-Pereida's car was traveling south on County Road 300 when it failed to yield to the northbound Kansas City Southern train, driven by Clifton A. Shupert, 28, Heavener, Okla.

The car was hit in the passenger side and pushed north on the tracks. Morales-Pereida was declared dead at the hospital at 1:05 p.m.
